I don't think this was a surprise--she was an odds-on favorite. I have to say, however, that--as much as I love English history, especially the period she covers in her two Booker Prize winners--I could not get into either of them. I found them really ponderous. Perhaps that's why the MBP committee has never asked me to confer with them.
