70-Year-Old Gardner Man Fights Off Home Intruder

Forgotten Books: Our Man in Washington -- Roy Hoopes

I really wanted to like this book.  When you hear the setup, you'll understand why.  The narrator is a young James M. Cain, and he teams up with H. L. Mencken to solve a murder in Washington, D. C.  The story involves the Harding administration and its many scandals, including Harding's mistress, but there's even more to it than that, and Cain and Mencken at one point find themselves playing catch with the Hope Diamond.  Many historical characters, from the well-known to the obscure, appear.

And that's part of the problem.  Hoopes is Cain's biographer, and he knows so much about Cain and about the time period that it seemed as if about 3/4 of every page was an info dump.  I was overwhelmed by the flood of information, and for me it got in the way of the story.  I like Cain's lean, mean storytelling style, which proves (for me) that less is more.  Hoopes' style is just the opposite.  If you prefer long books with plenty of historical detail and a decent plot, you might like this one much more than I did.  Give it a shot.

Amazon.com: Dead, White, and Blue (Death on Demand Mysteries) (9780425260777): Carolyn Hart: Books: Summer is a hectic time of the year for Annie Darling. Sun and scorching temperatures never fail to bring swarms of tourists to her mystery bookstore, Death on Demand, for the latest beach reads. But Annie still finds time to enjoy herself. The Broward’s Rock Fourth of July dance is just around the corner, and the island is buzzing with excitement—Shell Hurst included...

Shell is the kind of woman wives hate—for good reason—and most of them wish she would just disappear. But when she does, and a teenage girl is the only one who seems to notice, Annie can’t help but feel like someone should be looking for her. Last seen walking into the pine trees at the Fourth of July fireworks display, Shell has seemingly vanished without a trace.

The residents of Broward’s Rock grow uneasy when a second islander mysteriously disappears. Annie and her husband, Max, know something dangerous is brewing. They soon find themselves following a twisted trail marked by blackmail, betrayal, and adultery, winding from the corridors of the island’s lovely inn to a pier lashed by pelting rain, to a gathering on the terrace of a country club where a trap is set for a calculating killer…

Overlooked Movies: Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold

You don't have to hide your sneers. I know what you're thinking, and I don't blame you a bit.  You're thinking that anybody who'd watch this movie after having seen King Solomon's Mines with the same two stars is crazy.  I'm not disagreeing.

I do, however, have an excuse or two.  For one thing, I just can't resist movies about lost cities and lost civilization, no matter how bad they are (and make no mistake, this one is even worse than King Solomon's Mines).  Also, this one has Cassandra (Elvira) Peterson in it. That alone would be a good reason to watch, right?

Don't ask me what James Earl Jones is doing here.  He must really have needed the money.  And then there's Henry Silva, who pretty much steals the movie (as if he'd want it) as the over-the-top nutjob ruler of the lost city.  The special effects are even worse than the ones in King Solomon's Mines.  Laughable, in fact.  If I didn't know better, I'd think Ed Wood, Jr., had been sitting in the director's chair for this movie.

So this is a good movie to overlook.  On the other hand, if you're in the right mood, you might find it perversely amusing.  Silva is fun.  And there's Elvira.  Maybe I should . . . no, never mind.  You watch it.  I'll watch something else.

West of Babylon: Ted Heller : Amazon.com: Kindle Store: All four members of the Furious Overfalls banded together in the sleepy suburbs of Long Island in the seventies. With their raunchy, blistering, bubbling stew of rock, blues, and country, they sold millions of records and played to packed arenas. But then, almost as quickly as it started, it all stopped. The records stopped selling, and the cigarette lighters went out.

It’s now forty years later and—somehow, despite themselves—the band is still together. Just as they’re about to finally call it quits, one member of the band falls seriously ill, and they decide to take to the road one last time. With their aching bones, thinning hair, frazzled nerves and fraying tempers, can the four of them pull the tour off? Or will they again implode from within, something they’ve already done countless times?

From the acclaimed author of Pocket Kings comes an epic, heartfelt novel about friendship, family, hard work, love, life and death, and rock and roll.
