Those kids seem to be disproportionately rural...not that those of us growing up in cities dressed all that differently. I will say I did not have a pair of jeans until I bought them for myself--my parents thought jeans were "working class" apparel and we were NOT working class.
I and everyone I knew wore mostly 'blue jeans' growing up in far west Texas. Although quite hot much of the year, I don't remember anyone, kid or adult, ever wearing shorts.
