It's good to know that while organized crime was running rampant and Jim Crow was terrorizing huge areas of the country, J. Edgar and the boys were keeping us safe from...writers.
/Also, very scary that so many of the writers on that list were black and/or gay. JEH was a very, very strange man.
Deb beat me to it. Hoover got dissed in one of my favorite mystery novels (The Doorbell Rang), which apparently led to that author (Rex Stout) being investigated by the FeeBees.

That's one of my favorites by Stout. Wonderful stuff.
