I'm very fond of the Doug Selby books, and especially the anti-Perry-Mason character, A.B. Carr. (I have them all in hard cover, although none are in very good condition.)
I've only read a couple of this series. I didn't like them as well as the Perry Masons or the Lam and Cool books, but almost everything by ESG is worth reading, so I ought to try more of them.

There are 9 of them (see here: http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/G_Authors/Gardner_Erle-Stanley.html)
I haven't read the Doug Selby books, but I have several of them. Now, I'm tempted to read them after Don's comment.
