I've actually heard of 3 of them, and have only one of those (Empire of Cotton--for me, it's professional reading), which I'm about half way through (it's very good, but it takes a while). I'm planning to read Between the World and Me (Ta-Nehisi Coates is a brilliant writer). But none of the fiction on the list moves me at all.
Whenever I see a list like this, my immediate questions are "According to who?" and "Using what criteria?"

What the heck do they know?
I've only read a couple on this list and neither would qualify on my list of year's best, but what do I know compared to the NYT brain trust?
I have zero interest in most of these. I'd pick one of Bill's books any day.
