Once Upon a Time . . .

. . . Americans walked on the moon. I remember watching in wonder and awe. Now there are people who weren't even born when the last moonwalk took place. I'm glad I was around to see it the first time, and I'm sorry it won't happen again in my lifetime, and maybe not in anybody's.

I was glad about the moon landings and walks and watched with joy, but can't say I was awed at the time. I had been reading SF and Clarke's, Asimov's and others' science writing for some time, and the landings seemed somewhat inevitable to me, although technically and politically that was probably not at all the case. Despite today's environment, I still believe humanity will reach the stars someday, but I'm pretty sure I won't see it.
