Harmon Killebrew, R. I. P.

Harmon Killebrew Dies; Baseball's Humble Slugger : NPR: "Baseball fans are mourning a legend — Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew died Tuesday, ending his battle with esophageal cancer. Killebrew was a top power hitter in the 1960s. And he helped the fledgling Twins put down roots in a place that until 1961 had never had a major league team."

A reminder of how years fly by, too...

At the time (1960s) I wasn't much interested in big league baseball, but, for some reason, the sound of his name fascinated me, so I started paying attention to his actions / achievements when his name came up in sports news. He had a lot more going for him than his name !

Never was a Twin's fan, but always was a fan of Killebrew's playing.

I saw his final statement a couple of days ago. Sad. I still remember when he hurt himself doing that split at first base in the 1968 All-Star Game.

He was only 5'11" but he could hit the ball a long way.

573 homers shot out of ballparks a lot larger than they play in today and he didn't need steroids to do it.

Goodbye to a gentleman athlete.
