The 10 Best Teachers in Movie History : filmcritic.com

The 10 Best Teachers in Movie History : filmcritic.com: "One of the great things about adulthood is that we don't have to go to school anymore, and yet we keep returning by way of the movies. Why do we keep going back? To imagine what it would have been like to have good teachers rather than the sadists who tormented us in Algebra I and European History? To remember the moments when we really connected with a teacher and felt a wave of knowledge washing over us? Whatever the reason, we know as the lights dim that the best big-screen teachers will help their cinematic students learn plenty of small lessons and maybe some big life lessons too. How many of these memorable educators have you met?"

During the first year of my training for my mercifully aborted teaching career (merciful for both me and any prospective students that I might have had) one of my professors showed a brief excerpt from To Sir With Love in which Sidney Poitier's character (#3 on the list) explodes at the male students in his class over the tampon incident. This, said the professor, was how you didn't act with your students because it doesn't work. And a voice from the back of the classroom said "but in the movie it does work." Apparently our now flummoxed Prof never actually saw the movie. It is a great movie and as I later learned, sometimes it does work.

I can't believe they didn't include Tom Berenger in The Substitute.

It's a classic.

What? No Richard Dadier (Glenn Ford) from Evan Hunter's _The Blackboard Jungle_ (1955), in which Sidney Poitier also appears?

You mean "Lassie" - played by Kim Cattrall, or "Balbricker" - played by Nancy Parsons?

What!? No mention of Sam Kinison's Professor Terguson in "Back to School"?
