I picked up H.E. Bates's THE PURPLE PLAIN because I thought it would be like his LOVE FOR LYDIA (which I believe is similar to this book). Instead it was an incredible book about three RAF men (one severely injured) trying to find their way to civilization when their plane crashes in a remote part of Burma. The difference in theme and tone between the two books was amazing--I could hardly believe Bates had written both of them.

This one sounds pretty good, although I'm not sure I'm ready for "sickening suspense."
