Wow--would not have expected this. A bad week for entertainment icons indeed.
No indeed. Had no idea he was sick. They are dropping like flies. And yet some icons go on and on - and let's hope they keep on.
Chuck Berry is 89, Fats Domino is 87, Little Richard is 83, Jerry Lee Lewis is 80. Of that group, Richard certainly looks the healthiest. Willie Nelson is 82. Pat Boone is 81.
Dion is a relatively youthful 76, seems healthy, and performs regularly.
A lot of the singers we see relatively regularly are certainly in the 70ish range - Neil Young and John Fogerty are both 70, as is Bob Seger. Jimmy Buffett turned 69 on Christmas Day, Carlos Santana and Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) are 68, James Taylor turns that age in March, as does Jackson Browne in October.
Face it, we're geezers and like geezers who can still rock.
And if you don't like it, stay the heck off my damn lawn!
Don Henley and Joe Walsh are both 68 too.
I go back to what Chrissie Hynde said--all of our (baby boomers) rock heroes are going to die within the next ten years.
Some of the early rock era folks still around:
Connie Francis, 77
Kay Starr, 93.
Sue Thompson, 90
Lynn Evans, lead on most of the Chordettes hits (don't know her age)
Sherrell Paris of the Paris Sisters (80s)
Jack Scott, 80
Charlie Gracie, 79
Ronnie Dove, 80
Tony Bennett had a few rock hits, 89
Ed Ames of the Ames Brothers, 88
Clarence "Frogman" Henry, 78
Bonnie Guitar, 93
Neil Sedaka 76
Brenda Lee 71
Kris Kristofferson 79
Aretha Franklin 73
Jimmy Clanton 77
Steven Stills 71
Graham Nash 73
David Crosby 74
Van Morrison 70
Paul Simon 74
Rod Stewart 71
How did I forget these?
Brian Wilson 73
Mike Love 74
Christine McVie 73
Irma Thomas 74
Smokey Robinson 75
Dionne Warwick 75
I see Paul Simon, so Art Garfunkel should be on the list, too. Probably Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, too.
Er, Bill, Carl Wilson died in 1998.
Senior moment. I was thinking of Al Jardine. He's still around, right?
Frankie Valli must be 80 or more by now.
Yes, Al Jardine is still with us. I think he's the forgotten voice of the Beach Boys, and the one who adds so much to their sound.
Bummer about Glenn Frey, and a shock.
Al Jardine is 73
Art Garfunkel is 74
Frankie Valli is 81
Also, much like Jeff, Art Garfunkel has been keeping track of every book he's read since 1968:

True. Although I only started in 1971, periodically, and completely in 1975.
