My favorite "what things looked like then" is the North Point Press edition of The Maltese Falcon, with vintage pictures of SF. Their edition of the Big Sleep seems to be staged photos, and is a lot less interesting. But the photos in the "This Is What Los Angeles Looked Like In Its Glory Days" piece are mostly boring. I did like the one of the female cops on the firing range...didn't teach them the 2-handed pistol grip, apparently...

That was my favorite, too, although I never find pictures of the old days boring.
