Not forgotten by us. Those were the days when you knew every lyric. And it stayed with me for life.

Ditto, Patti.

Look at the English Top Ten down at the bottom of the chart. I was a eight year old Londoner at the time and I remember EVERY
song on that list!

/Marie, the dawn is breaking/Marie, you'll soon be waking...

I remember them all too, and liked most of them.

Deb - I first heard "Marie" sung by Louis Prima and Keely Smith.

I have a CD with the Bachelors' greatest hits, including that great version of "Marie."

I still know every lyric of every song...from 1965. Well, most of them. I don't remember "Your Baby Doesn't Love You Anymore" by Ruby & the Romantics, which was #11.

NYC top 10 of 6/30/65:

1 2 (I Can’t Get No) SATISFACTION - The Rolling Stones
2 1 I CAN’T HELP MYSELF - The Four Tops
3 8 I’M HENRY VIII, I AM - Herman’s Hermits
4 7 CARA, MIA - Jay & The Americans
5 6 DARLING TAKE ME BACK - Lenny Welch
6 5 YES, I’M READY - Barbara Mason
7 3 MR. TAMBOURINE MAN - The Byrds
8 4 WOOLY BULLY - Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs
9 10 THEME FROM “A SUMMER PLACE” - The Lettermen
10 9 FOR YOUR LOVE - The Yardbirds

What's New Pussycat? went from 24 to `12. Tom Jones is still going strong 50 years later. By this time in 1965 I was working up in summer camp near Binghamton getting ready for the campers to arrive.

The Lenny Welch song was apparently huge in NYC. I don't remember ever hearing it. I don't remember the Ruby and the Romantics song, either.

Three of the best--"Four Your Love. "Mr. Tambourine Man," and "Unchained Melody" are in the 21-30 part of the list.

Lenny Welch was (is) local - from New Jersey - and his songs seemed to do better locally than nationally. His biggest hit "Since I Don't Have You" - was #1 on at least one station here and #4 nationally.

His big hit in Texas was "You Don't Know Me," written of course by Cindy Walker of Mexia, Texas.

Jeff Meyerson said...

I did not know that. Wasn't the biggest version by Ray Charles?

I don't know. Welch's version was in 1960.

Yes, Ray Charles had a big hit with it and it's the one I know. I never heard Welch's.
