I guess this has no bearing on a Frank Luke comic, but I just read the Bantam reprint of Norman S. Hall's 1928 biography of Frank Luke, "The Balloon Buster." The writing is almost pulpish in places, but Hall claims to have visited with many people who knew Luke, and he includes some of Luke's own reports of his combat exploits. It was great reading, and it made it clear that Luke was a fascinating individual. Hall describes an incident like the one in the comic panel.
