Well, as arguable as all these things are by nature, the AFI fantasy list is if anything better and more responsible than the sf list, or as Scalzi would have it apparently to kiss up to his sponsors, sky fie. While I'd tend to agree with his starter list of recentish films.
Well, except for THE MATRIX, of course, which was as profoundly dumb as GATTACA, which Just Blew The Minds of many commenters on the article with its Deepitude.
10 Best SF films that come to mind since 1991:
As Scalzi suggests, ETERNAL SUNSHINE, 12 MONKEYS, and maybe THE INCREDIBLES.
...and at this point it becomes rather difficult to decide which films are actually worthy of even a top of the head list, particularly since I've missed such potential entries as ROBOT STORIES, FREQUENCY and PI so far.
CUBE LILO AND STITCH GALAXY QUEST 12:01 THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR EXISTENZ (and just maybe the good CRASH) ALIEN RESURRECTION/TERMINATOR III (just to annoy those pipped by my dismissal of big thinkers like )...I have to mull DONNIE DARKO a bit, perhaps.
Really, the television since 1991 is much stronger in terms of sf/borderline sf:
DAY BREAK JOURNEYMAN FIREFLY BABYLON 5 FARSCAPE FUTURAMA LIFE ON MARS OKTOBER (even in its dumbed down final cut) better X-FILES better ST franchise episodes --and again, leaving aside materials I haven't yet looked into sufficiently or at all, such as the DOCTOR WHO revival or SUPERNOVA.
I've only seen one of the five movies he cites, so I don't have much to contribute. The influence of "The Matrix" lives on, judging from the ads for "Wanted."
I was amused by the sidebar for "Masters of Sci Fi" ..."An Interview with Get Smart Director Peter Segal."
