Actually, Gomer, no...or, at least every "generic" romance novella and short story isn't like every other...I've read a few for review for THE FIX years ago and picked up over the years a few (extremely cheap) back issues of the Harlequin magazine. While I've yet to read a good historical romance in those media, I've read good examples of romantic suspense...mostly by apparently newer writers trying to prove themselves, as opposed to veterans phoning it in for the short form showcases.
These are pretty low-seeming rates for the reported sales. But perhaps the big names skew the sales considerably...I'd hope so, given the cited figures.

isnt every romance novel identical to every other romance novel? kind of like gun articles about .22 Magnums?
If I understand it, this would be a nice supplement to a real income, but in most cases far from the first job of choice.
If you dared to do anything interesting in a romance novel you'd be blackballed.
