The briefcase had a similar appearance in scenes near the beginning of Pulp Fiction (it was an homage, intentionally).
And before that, a film HEAVY METAL from producer Reitman, and Gerald Potterton had a strange glowing orb throughout, the Loch-Nar, and there was a scene or two with the deadly orb that certainly referenced KISS ME DEADLY!

A classic without a doubt, but that scene with the pliers (and all you see are the victim's feet) can still give me nightmares.
And what WAS in that briefcase?
In the uncut version it's a sign that says "THE END"
I thought it was the alien from Repo Man
