Morley Safer Dead at 84: Just days after retiring from 60 Minutes, Morley Safer is dead at age 84, reports CBS News. No word yet on a cause of death for Safer, who had worked on the show about half a century. His retirement, however, was attributed to unspecified health issues, notes CNN Money.
Hat tip to Deb.

Oh no! I'd hoped he'd have many years, and write a autobiography. I'm greatly saddened.
One does have to think he must've loved it to the end, to never want to retire. More consistently good work than his colleagues from the early years.
Sad news. My first thought when they accelerated the retirement deal last week was that he had been diagnosed with advanced cancer of some type.
It's been a long time since I watched 60 MINUTES regularly--they seemed to've shifted to a heavy dose of infotainment quite some time ago--but Mr. Safer's work was always good and a pleasure to watch. He never underestimated his audience (unlike some of his colleagues--I'm looking at YOU, Scott "Let's spell it out again for the halfwits" Pelley) and was a man of sense, integrity and real honesty, and I will miss him.
I watched 60 minutes and enjoyed his work for many years. Like you, I hadn't seen it much in recent years, but now I wish I'd at least watched some of his segments.
