This Year’s Most Outrageous Excuses for Being Late to Work

CareerBuilder: My favorite is this one: "My lizard had to have emergency surgery in the morning and died during surgery. I had to mourn while deciding whether to have the lizard disposed of by the vet or bring the lizard corpse with me to work."

Back in my corporate days (or, as I refer to them, "the hair, heels, and hose days"), my biggest frustration as a supervisor was chronically tardy employees who didn't seem to understand that if traffic is ALWAYS bad at 8:00, you have to plan to leave your house earlier. I actually had one staff member who told me, "I get up at 6:30 and not a minute before." She couldn't understand that the company wasn't going to subsidize her sleeping later than she could and still make it to work on time.

Students in my 8:00 A. M. classes never understood that concept, either.

That's why I never, ever took an 8 am class, Bill. I hate to be late.

20 years ago my brother had to take a day off work to mourn when Jerry Garcia died.

Yes! I have a dear friend who, while not a traveling Deadhead, attended many Dead concerts up and down the east coast. She took a sick day when Jerry died.

I was usually the first one to the office in the morning, but was then and still am subject to migraines and needed dark and absolute quiet, so I'd have to call in. My boss knew, and understood. Otherwise, excepting stomach flu or some such I was the early bird. Like Jeff I hate being late.

Excuses I got usually tended to be car related, it wouldn't start, had to call AAA was popular.

I was usually at the college by 7:00 for and 8:00 class. I don't like being late, either.

Deb, I bet my brother would know your friend, at least by sight. He used to hang out at Dead concerts with John Belushi.

Legend has it that Janet Rudolph was around at a lot of those concerts.

My friend is an adamant athiest and always claims that Dead shows were the closest thing to a religious experience she's ever had.

Then again, my brother has 450 Facebook friends so she might be one of them.

I once said I slept wrong and my neck/head was frozen to the side and I couldn't look out my windshield to drive.

My last 10-15 years in the Civil Service saw me calling in sick almost once a week. I just hated getting up in the morning.
