BBC News: Nicholas Smith, the actor who played store manager Mr Rumbold in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served?, has died aged 81.
He had been the last surviving member of the original cast.
My approach to AYBS was the same as my approach to watching Benny Hill: This is a reflection of its time and culture. Yes, not everyone in 1970s England was watching. "The Forsythe Saga" and. "Upstairs, Downstairs".
I have no problem with it, Deb. Not my taste. But if you knew my parents you'd have been as surprised as we were that they were such fans. She was normally much more of an Upstairs, Downstairs kind of person and he rarely watched anything but sports.
I thought it was laugh-out-loud funny, and I don't say that about many comedies. I watched and loved Masterpiece Theatre (as it was called then) too. Benny Hill, though was too much, I only tried it once. Mr. Bean, though.......

For whatever reason, my parents loved ARE YOU BEING SERVED and watched it all the time.
