I don't read much contemporary noir because it seems to have "noir" written all over in a very self-conscious way. I did not luck the couple of Jason Starr books I read. I thought they were sloppily written and in desperate need of a ruthless editor. IMHO, the writer of the article could have put Megan Abbott's books (that he put in the "also ran" category) in place of Starr's.

I can't agree only because I haven't read most of them. I did like THE ICE HARVEST. And I have a couple of the others on my Kindle.

Haven't read any of them, but I'm not much for noir any more.
I'm with Deb on Jason Starr, by the way. I've found him unreadable, even in collaboration with Ken Bruen.
