James Shigeta, R. I. P.

Variety: James Shigeta, one of the first prominent Asian-American actors, who co-starred in “Die Hard” and starred in “Flower Drum Song,” died Monday at 81.

One of those actors whom I thought had already died. In fact, I could have sworn I read of his passing several years ago.

I always liked him and always thought he should have had a greater presence in the TV guest star circuit. One of the series I wish he had been in was 'Columbo'. I think he had the proper bearing and air of disdain to have played the murderer in an episode. It would have made for a nice departure from the white bread rogues' gallery. (Montalban and Elizondo were the only real exceptions. And even then....)

Great actor. He was also a Marine, and swerved in Korea. He was great in everything he did. I loved Flower Drum Song, one of his greatest performances..

I remember him mainly from the FLOWER DRUM SONG era. His name was quite familiar then.
