Although not necessarily my favorite American author I put in You Can't Go Home Again - Thomas Wolfe. Has the best last paragraph of any American novel. Faulkner thought Wolfe was the best American novelist of his time, not for what he accomplished, but what he attempted to accomplish. I'll go along with that.
I've read the first 20 and most of the rest including the Other category. If there had been a specific SF category, I'd have voted for CHILDHOOD'S END by Arthur C. Clarke

/My vote goes to The Sound and the Fury, but I was glad to see The Big Sleep made the cut.
