You'd think Chariots of the Gods had never been debunked if you watch the History Channel these days. It's gone from all-Hitler-all-the-time to endless awful shows about aliens building the pyramids.
Maupin's novel about the Godby scam, THE NIGHT LISTENER, was made into a movie with Robin Williams. Also, I think Keith Olbermann was another celebrity who got caught up in that flim-flam.

Also The Bermuda Triangle by Charles Berlitz and Chariots of the Gods.
Dianetics, a really bad piece of cheese.

Also forgotten: the case of Anthony Godby Johonson.
Which is strange, because it inspired an Armistead Maupin novel and an episode of "Law and Order: Criminal Intent".
