I like to point out to folks that when I was in school ('56 to '68) in rural Texas, you can bet that every boy in class probably had his own pocket knife in his pocket every day. However, I never knew anyone to pull one out in a fight. It was just understood you didn't. It wasn't a weapon, it was a tool.

We used ours to play mumblety peg.
We didn't get to have guns until the 9th grade in New York.
