Somewhat bungled article, but gives me an excuse to trumpet R. A. Lafferty who didn't start writing for publication until ~ 45 years old. To somewhat accurately quote Neil Gaiman: Lafferty was a unique writer who was "the best there ever was at whatever it was that he wrote!"
Three of the greats of the 20th century were 40-something when they began doing what they became famous for; Raymond Chandler, Howlin' Wolf and Carl Barks. I'd say Barks is probably the most influential of them.
