Boston.com: Nicol Williamson, the British actor best known for his role as the wizard Merlin in the 1981 film "Excalibur," has died of esophageal cancer, his son said Wednesday. He was 75.
He was far from my favorite Hamlet, but his performance was thoughtful and well-received by many critics who wouldn't cross the street to spit on me. I recall him as an agreeably nasty heavy in THE WILBY CONSPIRACY and a surprising Little John in ROBIN AND MARIAN

I really loved his performance in Excalibur. :-(
He played the cop in "Slither" back in the early 80s and made the movie almost believable. Good stuff.

Oh can't believe I forgot "The 7 Percent Solution." liked it better the second time.
This has been a tough few months for actors who played Sherlock Holmes. John Wood, John Neville and Nicol Williamson, all gone.
