Winchester '73

Edward Copeland on Film: “He said if a man had one friend, he was rich…I'm rich…”: "Sixty years ago on this date, Winchester ’73 was released to theaters. Its surprising success breathed new life into what many thought was a tired genre (beaten to death by singing cowboys and B-picture oaters) and ensured a slew of successful Western movies to come throughout the 1950s."

Excellent commentary by Ivan Shreve, Jr.

One of my all-time favorite movies. I saw it when I was ten years old and never forgot it. I've seen it many times since then and it holds up perfectly. Anthony Mann and James Stewart were a great team.

This fine film not only revived the Western, but also the career of its star.

WINCHESTER '73 also had two of the greatest character names in film history: Dutch Henry Brown and Waco Johnny Dee.

I last saw this one just a few months ago. It is a good one, isn't it.

I was around ten, as Ed was, the first time I saw this. It made quite an impression.

One of my favorites. Actually squeezed a grad school paper out of it.
