My Publisher is Also St. Martin's . . .

. . . but I'm not getting $50 mil for my next four books.

Mystery Books News: Janet Evanovich May Be Leaving Long-Time Publisher St. Martin's Press: "It isn't often that an author changing publishers makes news. But when the author is Janet Evanovich and the publisher is the St. Martin's Press imprint of Macmillan and the reported amount involved is $50 million for her next four books, that's news."

Hey Bill,

Maybe if you threaten to leave, they'll adjust your advance accordingly.

Yes! I'm positive that would work!

$23 million?

Frankly, I just returned her latest book to the library after slogging through 50 boring pages.

NOTHING ever changes. Stephanie is the same incompetent 'bounty hunter', Lula makes wisecracks (some of which are funny), Grandma runs amok at a funeral, Stephanie flirts with Ranger and sleeps/fights with Morelli... BORING! And yet this crap sell senough to get her $50 MILLION?

Give me Sheriff Rhodes any day of the week.

My real question is does the publisher really expect to recoup more than $12 million each on just four books? And that's not counting their overhead, printing costs, etc.

Somebody's gotta take over the old 4 books for 40+ million deal, otherwise they'll have a gaping hole in their budget. The old spend-or-you-don't-get-it-next-year thinking.

I think you should bite the bullet and take the 4 books for 40 mil deal. That way you're helping out your publisher.

I just want them to know I'm there for them.
