It was originally announced by Disney in 2002, during the fervor after 9/11, as a Ron Howard movie, with Russell Crowe slated to star as Sam Houston and Ethan Hawke as Bill Travis. Then (according to the press at the time) Disney got cold feet over costs among other things, Howard dropped out as director and Crowe/Hawke as stars, and it eventually emerged as a less costly production with greatly diminished star power. An Entertainment Weekly article said that sets were built in Austin ..?? Not a terrible movie, but like the Turner civil war movies, the extras playing the defenders mostly look like reenactors hired on the cheap.
