Evan Lewis, over at Davy Crockett's Almanack of Mystery, Adventure and The Wild West tagged me with this one: "What are your five favorite internet stores (other than Amazon)?"
Actually, I don't think I can come up with five unless we count Abebooks and Half.com, both of which I use mainly for buying out-of-print books. I buy running shoes at Holabird Sports. I buy some gear from Sports Depot, too. Electronics stuff, I get from Fry's now and then. That's about it for me. I use Amazon more than anywhere else.

Bad Bill. Using Amazon contributes only to continued takeover of America by one-size fits all shopping. One place to buy, they decide WHAT you can buy. Also, they are an evil empire. I am very pleased see Amazon and Walmart shooting themselves in competition on best sellers in the DVD and book worlds.
Do very little on-line buying, but my dvds come through Deepdiscount.com. All free shipping, all the time. Many sales.
I am pleased to say I've never made a purchase from Amazon and never been in a Wal-mart.
Just my two cents.
Still love ya, man.

Yeah, but you live in a place where you have access to other places. In Alvin, Texas, Wal-Mart is the only department store. Really. It's either drive 15 miles or go to Wal-Mart. Or order on Amazon.
It's all very well for Steve to rag on Amazon. But I live in a small town that has only one book store, a Christian one. They have very little I like.
Add to the fact that I'm stuck pretty much to a wheelchair and Amazon is a godsend. I can order and have it delivered to the door.
So, I'm sorry, but I like Amazon.
Supplement aside from ABEBooks and such include IndieBound, the heir to Book Sense from the ABA:

The discounts on Amazon can be persuasive, but they did send me not one but two sun-yellowed copies of Jakubowski's most recent BEST BRITISH MYSTERY volume...in succession.
I'll bet those running shoes come in handy when you're doing research on which lawns we need to stay off of.
You bet. I leave those lawn-watchers in my dust.
I don't really like Amazon, but I use them reluctantly. I boycotted them for a good ten years first, though. I don't use any other online store other than a rare one-time purchase of a special item.
I purchase quite a few things from Amazon. I look first in the local stores, but I guess my wants are pretty non-mainstream, because I end up getting many items from Amazon because they have exactly the item I want. Simple as that. If local stores want my business, they need to carry what I'm interested in.
