Cnn - Horror Icon Lee Hates 'Obscene' Modern Horror - Contactmusic News: "Horror movie icon SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE has branded modern fright films 'obscene'.
The British actor, who was a regular in the cult Hammer horror films of the 1960s and 1970s, tells CNN that movies like the Saw franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, Halloween and Cabin Fever leave him feeling sick.
Lee says, 'I find it quite nauseating what they do. The blood is all over the screen like an avalanche - the mutilation - dreadful things, and I just don't enjoy that.'"

I agree with him. Gore is too often a substitute for story and character. In the new issue of Black Static Christopher Fowler discusses the notion of ideas in today's horror movies. The original Hills Have Eyes, for instance, seemed to me to be a commentary on families. There were moments of melancholy and pathos in it. Same with the original Assault on Precinct 13. But the remakes...not so much. I don't mind gore if it's earned by intelligent writing but the whole Saw-influenced crap is just titillation. That's all right once in awhile but it sure does get boring after awhile.
I agree, too. I can't watch some of the more recent horror movies. Maybe I'm just old and squeamish, though.
I'm with Lee all the way. Those Hammer films were stylish. There were definitely some scares and thrills, but "torture porn" has no entertainment value for me.
I completely agree. Today's horror films are about grossing people out, not scaring them. There are few 'scary' movies released today that I want to spend my money on.
