The strangest thing about this story is why ACD chose to write a mystery novel, when he admittedly knows almost nothing about the genre, and for which he has scant interest and evident contempt!
"I mean, if that utter literary trash saw commercial publication, DEED [the charming fellow's novel, if it is a novel] would be a shoe-in."
Except, of course, his wasn't commercially published, but vanity published...a hobby rather than a job. There's some terrible mystery fiction on the "bestseller" lists, but I think my sympathy is somewhat less than even Art Scott's.
