The world's ten largest cities
The world's ten largest cities: The Big Picture: 518 million people (7% of the global population) now live in megacities of 10 million or more people. That's a tenfold increase from four decades ago, and it's radically changing the way people live, work and view the world.

For what it's worth (not much) the 10 largest metro areas (which is consistent with what the piece here is using) in the US account for about 25% of the total US population...The 10th largest metro area in the US (according to the 2010 census) was Boston, at 4.55 million.
