Houston Chronicle: Former major leaguer Jim Piersall, who bared his soul about his struggles with mental illness in his book "Fear Strikes Out," has died. He was 87.
I had moved to the Chicago area while he was still working with Harry Caray on the Sox games (not on WGN; I'm blanking on the station, but it was channel 32). He was prone to fly off the handle and rant, but would also make very precise, wonderfully observed comments about something that had happened.
After leaving the White Sox broadcast, Jimmy did a lot of commentary on Chicago radio stations. It was the best baseball commentary I ever listened to. On a sports talk show yesterday, many people said that he and Willie Mays were the best centerfielders ever. They also said he had a wonderful skill for teaching young players how to play the outfield.

I hadn't heard anything about him for years. I didn't know he was still alive. I remember the movie with Tony Perkins.
A household name when I was a kid.
