Yellowstone visitor feared dead after falling into hot spring
Hat tip to Art Scott, who says, "'Park officials' should consult the
1947 Nero Wolfe novella, 'Man Alive' (in Three Doors to Death), in which a man
fakes his own death by staging an apparent suicide jumping into a geyser."

Growing up we took a lot of trips to Yellowstone. Accidental deaths and suicides accounted for about six to ten deaths each year according to the park rangers.
Our National Parks are being ruined by the NPS. They are slowly turning the popular ones into Disneylands.
Like all agencies, the NPS follow congressional mandates. Their original mission was and continues to be corrupted by Congress which expects the NPS to fund itself through admissions, and other revenue generating functions such as oil and gas exploration, etc.
In turning things into Disneyland style venues they have also created the false illusion of perfect and total safety in the parks. People have gotten stupider in the process and lost the ability to understand these places contain the "wild" in the wilderness. As a result, you have folks putting a baby bison in a car because they think the bison was cold, people getting mauled by bears because they thought they could walk right up and snap a picture, etc.
And, back to the point of the story, there are deaths. Some people go to the parks specifically to kill themselves. Some of those "falls" that happen at Royal George, Big Bend, The Grand Canyon, etc., are suicides. This incident may or may not be a suicide. It could also be a simple accident as was the one that we saw back in the summer of 1980 in the park.
Things happen and the NPS has nothing to do with it.
Kevin is right about people getting stupider (if that's even possible). I read a story a couple of days ago about a couple who were "shocked" when a bear walked over and opened their car door, which was unlocked with the window rolled all the way down.
A petition I just signed which is coming about because of NPS plans based on the lack of congressional funding....

Thanks for the link, Kevin.
