Cursive Update

Why Are We Still Teaching Kids Cursive?

Because it's several times faster to write something out in cursive than to print it letter by letter. Also, if kids aren't taught to write cursive, then they can't read it either, including such things as a signature.

Louisiana just passed a requirement that students learn cursive. Although what they'll eliminate in order to fit it in, I haven't a clue. My oldest has neat cursive handwriting but in the five years between her and the twins, cursive was apparently dropped and neither twin (they're almost 18) can do more than sort of loop letters together for a signature.

Jackie, who has a terrible left-handed cursive style, says she was supposed to teach cursive to third graders, but never did and was never called on it.

I think cursive handwriting is valuable and important to know/do, the article is a bunch of hooey and I'm amazed Deb didn't teach her kids cursive herself.

Although I can write in cursive (as my signature will attest), I print everything. I'd be no good teaching anyone cursive handwriting.
