TO YOUR SCATTERED BODIES GO blew my mind when I first read it. Farmer came up with some incredible concepts. But he had problems fulfilling the promise of his ideas.
I remember reading the first book and being amazed. To Your Scattered Bodies Go just blew me away (especially the opening); The Fabulous Riverboat was very good. The Dark Design was not so good, and The Magic Labyrinth...well, I got about 20 pages into it. Have not even thought about reading Gods of Riverworld.
As I said in my comment over there, I found the books (I read 2) to be gimmicky and boring. Never much liked Farmer, and those cemented that low opinion.

The series went downhill, all right. I stopped after book 3.
Farmer didn't have too good a time of it in the '70s onward except perhaps commercially. At least the latter '70s.

You stopped almost exactly where I did, Don, except that you got farther into Magic Labyrinth.
