New York Times: Guy Lewis, a Hall of Fame basketball coach known for leading the University of Houston’s Phi Slama Jama teams of the early 1980s, died on Thursday at a retirement home in Kyle, Tex. He was 93. Hat tip to Jeff Meyerson.
I well remember all the hype about the team, how they "played above the rim," and the huge crash back to Earth at their shocking loss to NC State in the NCAA Finals. (They lost to Patrick Ewing and Georgetown the next year.)
They certainly did a lot to help explode basketball in the national consciousness.
