In THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT, author Jim Garrison described Lewis Powell (alias Lewis Paine) as big, strong, silent, and stupid. Because he bore a passing resemblance to my Uncle Gene, we dubbed my uncle Lew, but not to his face.
