The NYC top 10 for 10/7/64 had a lot of my favorites:
1 2 OH, PRETTY WOMAN - Roy Orbison & The Candy Men 2 1 DANCING IN THE STREET - Martha & The Vandellas 3 3 DO WAH DIDDY DIDDY - Manfred Mann 4 12 A SUMMER SONG - Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde 5 4 LET IT BE ME - Betty Everett & Jerry Butler 6 10 HAVE I THE RIGHT? - The Honeycombs 7 5 I’M ON THE OUTSIDE (Looking In) - Little Anthony & The Imperials 8 22 BABY LOVE - The Supremes 9 7 IT HURTS TO BE IN LOVE - Gene Pitney 10 6 COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER - Jay & The Americans
I wion't be here next weekend so I can tell you that "Baby Love" will go right to #1. It was the biggest seller of all the hits of The Supremes. Also taking big jumps will be "Leader of the Pack" and "Last Kiss."
I was dragooned into teaching first-year Spanish in 1964, and all the students got Spanish names. Naturally there was Jose, and naturally "Come a Little Bit Closer" got him teased a bit in that class.
