So that parents can come to a compromise when deciding on first names.

Many years ago, at my first "file and smile" office job, I commented about how many people seemed to have the middle name "Nmi" and I wondered what it meant. I'm sure there were many suppressed smiles from the more experienced staff that day.

I thought it was done to give the kid a choice of which name he'd rather be called. What say you, Dr A.B.C.?

I never knew I had a choice. My parents called me Bill, and that was that, even though neither of my names is Bill.

The daughter of a friend in England didn't like her name - which was something nice like Alison or something like that - so called herself by her middle name, which was Bindley.

The Brits cane be as odd as Americans sometimes.

In Judy's family, hardly anybody seems to have gone by birth names. Her aunt Lily Faye, for example, was called "Judy," and Judy was named for her.
