NY Restaurant Figures Out Surprising Reason for Customer Complaints

Hat tip to Art Scott, who says this may be a hoax, even though it seems all too believable.

While I don't believe it is real, it is all too believable. You see stuff like that all the time.

I have seen stuff like this all the time. I have seen folks pull this crap in the line at the grocery store. I have even seen some patients tell the nurses to wait to dispense chemo until they finished their phone call.

Amazingly rude behavior in all cases.

Agreed, and if this is a hoax, it's still real.

I have a question about the 45 customers: would that be 45 individuals (which probably would translate to about ten or so tables) or 45 tables (which might be around 160 customers)? Whether or not it's "true," it's completely accurate--people are so attached to their damn phones they can't relate to anyone or anything around them. My husband and I have an ironclad family rule: no cell phones at the table, at home or in a restaurant.

That's a good rule.

Good rule, Deb. This is one area where I'm glad we're old and not obsessed with checking Facebook or Twitter (neither of which we belong to) every few seconds for updates. We've seen four people at a table in a restaurant all checking their phones all ignoring each other too many times to count.

And stay off my lawn!

At a restaurant in Austin a couple of years ago, we sat at a table next to a group of teenagers, all of whom had their phones out. It was a nice quiet table, and I realized eventually that they were all texting each other instead of talking.
