The terrible thing is the people who use these don't know they are wrong.
Jeff, if you look up the lyrics, it says "asks", I think he just slurs it in the song. Still "axe" for ask is common among African Americans any more, and they have no idea it's incorrect.

I was listening to "Mother in Law" by Ernie K-Doe from back in 1961 and he says,
"I come home with my pay (mother in law, mother in law)
She axed me what I made..."
