I'm about fifty/fifty on this. In my opinion, some of the originals were much better than the remakes. A couple he doesn't mention are THE TIME MACHINE and ON THE BEACH. Though the originals will always remain tops, I loved the remakes.

Idon't know if TRUE LIES is better than the French original not having seen the latter, but it still sucked.

I would agree with most of these. Although The Ten Commandments is a pretty crappy movie in both versions.

The remake of TRUE GRIT is in no way a measurably better movie than the original, and arguably worse. I think the critics' reaction had more to do with their precious love for the Coen Brothers (who have made more clunkers than winners, in my opinion. but the critics dig their labored whimsy) and disdain for John Wayne than cinematic merit.

For me, Glen Campbell kind of weighed down the original, but I thought it was just as good as this remake even at that.

Have to disagree with Fred. The original True Grit is only watcheable because of John Wayne. Glen Campbell had no acting ability at all and Kim Darby wasn't much better.
