Pretty much on target! In 25 years of book-sorting & book-pricing for library sales, I have to say there was a lot of junk well worth burning! But I'm also happy to say I found plenty of great books (both in content and appearance) that found good homes for bargain prices.
Preaching to the choir, but all of you who cherish good books of all kinds, patronize the remaining independent bookstores at least some of the time and any library book sales in your area! Be your own Book Scout and Bin Diver!

I was shocked to find out that our local city and county libraries, if you donate a book more than 5 years old, will sell it, even if they don't have a copy in any of their branches.

@ Marsdon: Have to say that, except for some small town libraries, hardly any books donated to libraries are ever put on shelves for readers. Donated books are stored, sold or trashed.
Again,as the article says, it's hard to blame public libraries. It costs time & money to handle even one donated book. Handling costs & what the majority library-using public wants are the driving factors. I continue to donate books to libraries, charities, etc., knowing that at least some will get to people who want to read them or even sometime make some money off them!
