The Decline of Western Civilization Continues Apace

Best Comedy of All Time | CollegeHumor: "Forget what the American Film Institute or your film professors have to say. They're just boring old people! We asked YOU, people reading CollegeHumor, to vote on your favorite comedies and we have compiled the definitive list of The 100 Best Comedies of All Time (according to people who actually watch comedies, and not the aforementioned old people)."

Some decent movies here, but any list without BRINGING UP BABY, the Marx Brothers, or the original THE PRODUCERS is more than suspect. Perhaps the list should be called "The 100 Best Comedy Films I Watched When I Should Have Been Studying But I Wasn't Because I Was Stoned." I mean, National Lampoon's Van Wilder? Sheesh!

The only good thing about that list is that it isn't a slide show.

Movie comedy was evidently invented sometime around 1973, but did not really take off until the 21st century. I think I'll pop some Laurel & Hardy into the DVD player to get this out of my head.

Mr. Deeds? As in Adam Sandler's Mr. Deeds? WTF - that immediately invalidates the rest of the list, as does any other Sandler movie. And Jackass: Number Two? Double WTF?

I have to agree with Jerry on Van Wilder, which to my mind was literally unwatchable.

Mel Brooks's History of the World Part 1 was one of the least funny comedies I've ever had the misfortune to sit through. Notice there was never a Part 2.

90% of Spaceballs was painfully unfunny.

This list is just sad. About 25% is worth keeping (NONE of the Sandler movies).

Where is IT'S A GIFT or NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK or any other Fields? Where is DUCK SOUP or any other Marx Brothers? Where is Laurel & Hardy?

Just pathetic.

Best according to a bunch of callow, snot-nosed, mundane punks who don't realize there was a world before they discovered the mall.

I'd take THE FRONT PAGE over anything on that list.

I blame colour Television. It used to be that TV would show old black and white movies and no one would care because nothing else was in colour. That's how I learned to love the Marx Brothers, Abbot and Costello, W.C. Fields, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Danny Kaye and so many of the other greats. That and rep houses and movies on campus. These young pups won't watch anything in black & white and don't think anything made before they were born could possibly be funny to them. It makes me weep that my little nephew will never fully appreciate the genius of Harpo, Chico, Grouch and sometimes Zeppo. What's worse is that his father doesn't either.

Of the few decent movies listed, e.g. Groundhog Day, I wouldn't really consider them as "comedies".
I agree with all the comments so far. The only hope I see is that the kids/grandkids of today's generation of parents, being naturally antagonistic to anything their parents like, will discover the "old" comedies and cherish them.
