Detroit Update

Detroit in ruins | Art and design | The Observer: "Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre's extraordinary photographs documenting the dramatic decline of a major American city"

I'm not sure which picture is the saddest, but the one of the library stands out.

If I was a filmmaker, I would be getting to Detroit or Gary, Indiana, straightaway, to film my dystopian post-apocalyptic thriller. I wouldn't need to build any sets.

What a terrible tragedy, brought on by, what? poverty, crime, despair? Certainly a profound lack of caring for property, beauty or even utility. Apparently no one even cares to salvage what might be useful in these buildings. What a tragedy.

You can see this weekly on the TV show Detroit 187. The train station is the worst. The city doesn't even have the money to implode these places. And they are filming a lot of movies here that use the decay.
Poverty and incompetence. The city has been deserted by everyone else although at six blocks from it, I am hardly immune. Believe me when I say, other than the small cultural center and the sporting arenas, the whole city is pretty much like this.

Sounds like Baltimore.

I expected to see the guys from American Pickers mucking around in some of those shots. What a shame that so many beautiful examples of art and architecture have been destroyed.
