Downtowns were dying waaaaaay before WalMarts became ubiquitous. Malls, not WalMarts, supplanted downtowns; and, in a way, WalMart has supplanted the malls.
I live in a town with not one, but two Super WalMarts (plus a Sam's Club). I'm not a cheerleader for WalMart, I do acknowledge some of the negative impacts they have, but I shop at WalMart at least once a week. I can get all my groceries plus most other items (everything from toiletries to a/c filters to gardening supplies) in one place for a fairly reasonable price. I agree, the book and magazine selection sucks (at Sam's Club it's even worse--it's like the Fox News Book Club in there) and you have to examine the fresh produce carefully, but I can stay within my budget and still find the occasional "exotic" item (like hummus or feta cheese--yes, I've been cooking some Greek food this week).

Two Wal-Marts and a Sam's Club? Wow.
I don't think that's quite so unusual, Bill--especially here below the Mason-Dixon line.
I'm with Lansdale on this, but, regardless, the article just shows again what a good writer he is, no matter what the subject.
