Actually, the tale of CARRIE by Stephen King is probably all wrong.
In a book by King himself, he had written a number of pages and threw the manuscript he had away. His wife rescued the pages, read and was encouraged by what was there and requested that he continue with the book.
At this point, he had several other books finished (Sword in the Darkness; Blaze; Rage; The Long Walk) and had probably been through some rejections but he got two of them later published after Doubleday gave him the contract for Carrie!

Such things give me hope.
